Document signed by Josiah Burchett (c.1666-1746), Secretary to the Admiralty (1694-1742)
William Grainger, late a Sergeant in Captain Odbert's company of marines, has petitioned their Lordships that he was sent from the NEPTUNE to London to raise recruits. He continued in that service from 20 November 1696 to 22 January 1697 and was not borne either on the land list or on the ship's books during that time. Their Lordships direct you to the enclosed letter from Colonel Brudenall, proposing that Grainger be borne upon the land muster for the time, and also a letter from Captain Beaumont and Captain Odbert's certificate about this matter. You are directed to see that right is done to William Grainger as is proposed.
