These include a letter by Stratford de Redcliffe informing him he had been appointed a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Sultan's army, documents in Turkish granting him permission to wear a sword in camp, letter from Captain Frederick Henry Dymock granting Ballard permission to wear a medal awarded to him by the Ottoman government. There are also three letters relating to movements of enemy troops during the Indian Mutiny, one sent by Brigadier Clement Edwards.
