Poem in the hand of E. H. Shackleton, signed and dated 27 July 1917. Marked (Anon)’. The poem was written during a short period back in England after Shackleton’s famous 800 mile sea voyage in the 22ft boat The James Caird after his ship Endurance was crushed in the ice. He had arrived back in England in April 1917 and left for Argentina in October on a diplomatic mission. The first two lines are from James Elroy Flecker’s proposed rewording of the National Anthem written in 1916. Flecker died in January 1917 aged 27 and was one of a number of patriotic young poets influenced by the First World War
