Watercolour. Medium includes graphite. View from starboard of the iron-hulled gunship Delta (1876) (Chinese name Tche-tien or Ts'eTien) under way against a pale sky, smoke issuing from her single funnel. Rigged as a topsail schooner she has one gaff sail set aft with the two jibs and other sails loosely furled. Crew can be seen on deck. Delta was two-masted, single screw frigate, lauched from the Low Walker Yard and commissioned into the service of the Chinese Navy. She carried a single 12.5in muzzle loading Armstrong gun and was based at Shanghai as part of the Nanyang, Southern Seas Fleet.
