Portuguese steamer Ibo

The Steam ship 'Ibo' was launched in November 1907, built by Sir Raylton Dixon & Co. Ltd of Middlesborough, for the Empreza Nacional de Navegação, Lisbon (since 1918 Companhia Nacional de Navegação). The 'Ibo' was built for cargo and passengers service to the Mozambique coast. By 1922, it was used for services along the coast of Portugal. By 1940, the ship was renamed 'Alpha', and acquired by Empresa Luso-Marroquina Ltd. En route from Lisbon to Liverpool with a cargo of banana, the 'Alpha' was sunk off Brest on 15 July 1940 by the German airforce The crew was rescued by a French trawler.
