The Honble Sr George Byng Bart Lord Viscount Torrington, and Knt of the Bath
An oval bust-length portrait of George Byng (1663–1733) in a long wig and metal breastplate. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘The Honble. Sr. George Byng Bart. Lord Viscount Torrington and Knt. of the Bath.’ Also lettered with the publication line, ‘Printed & Sold by Tho: Bakewell next the Horn Tavern in Fleetstreet.’ This portrait was engraved by John Faber the Younger after an original painting by Godfrey Kneller (see BHC2589). It was initially published by Faber himself in 1718 (see PAD4656). This version of the print was published by Thomas Bakewell sometime after 1725 with a new inscription referring to Byng as 1st Viscount Torrington, which he became in September 1721, and Knight of the Bath, which he became in May 1725. (Updated May 2019.)
