La Rochelle: view across the harbour to the Quai Valin, with storm clouds and a rainbow
Oil painting. Everett's viewpoint appears to be east from the Quai de Carenage, which projects south into the middle of the harbour and separates it from the floating basin (now used for pleasure craft) on the east side. The white tower is the lighthouse, which is integrated in the bulding line of the houses on the Quai Valin. The tower at far right is that of the old parish church of Saint-Nicolas set back across the Place de la Motte Rouge, deconsecrated to other uses in 1887 and since 1978 converted as a hotel. Today it lacks the central spire, having only a low pyramidal roof profile.
