Portrait of the 'Asperen'

Portrait of the ‘Asperen’, viewed from the starboard quarter. She was built in 1656; 36 guns, she was wrecked in 1689. The arms of Asperen are on the tafferel, with lion supporters, quarterly 1 and 4, three billets; 2 and 3 a lion rampant; inescutcheon two bars, embattled counter embattled. On the rail above are the arms of Amsterdam, three saltires on a pale. Two shields are on the counter, on the port side a lion rampant and on the starboard side crossed anchors for the Admiralty of Amsterdam.

This is an offset rubbed on the back, but not in reverse, well worked up with pencil and wash. An offset in the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam shows the ‘Asperen’ from the port quarter; the Asperen arms in reverse, but not the arms on the counter. Another offset in the same museum shows the ship from the starboard quarter and is either the original or is offset from the former; neither is related to the drawing in the NMM.
