Print showing action between the Cato (or Caton), Jason (named Argonaut after capture) and Valiant, inscribed with a descrpition of the events: 'The Cato after a short action falling off with her Bows to the Valiant, upon being raked struck, the Jason then endeavouring to get off, was persued by the Valiant, and after a warm Action of three quarters of an hour she struck just as the Valiant was going to board her, being then in shoal water of six fathom, & within three miles of land. / Narrative. The Cato and Jason with three frigates were dispatch'd to Cape Francois by the Compte de Grasse, before his engagement with Lord Rodney on the 12 of April 1782, but having been becalmed in their passage for several days under the Islands, were discover'd by a squadron under the Command of Lord Hood, that had been detatched by Lord Rodney from the English Fleet. In chace, the Valiant cross'd the shoals of Cape Roxo with great risque of the ship striking for several miles, as she was often so near the ground as to drag the sand up after her, and coming up with them about three o' clock in the afternoon, while the rest of the squadron was becalm'd or chasing different ways, attacked and took them both as describ'd in these plates.'
The painter is signed 'D. Serres R.A. pinx', the engraver 'J. Fittler direx', and the place published 'London, Publish'd as the Act directs, Novr 1787, by James Fittler, No. 62 Upper Charlotte Street, Rathbone Place'.

The Caton was taken by Lord Hood in the Mona Passage on April 19th, 1782, and is shown in the foreground of the left of the picture.
