Operations in the Canton River 3. Forts and Batteries of the Bocca Tigris or First Pass of the Canton River; H.M. Steam Ship, Vulture Captain Macdougall passing the Batteries, with the 18th Royal Irish on board

Before the First Opium War, Western shipping approaching Canton or leaving Whampoa was obliged to pass between the forts of North and South Wangtong Islands in the west of the Bocca Tigris. To the east lies the island of Anunghoy with batteries at the foot of Wushan Mountain. Further to the east are two batteries, Weiyuan and Jingyuan. This image shows the steam ship Vulture attacking the Bocca Tigris against resistance from Chinese war ships.
