Medal commemorating peace between Chile and Argentina, 1902. Obverse: Starboard-bow view of the cruisers 'San Martin' (Argentina) (left) and 'O'Higgins' (Chile) (right) side by side under steam. Legend: 'INDE PAX UTRIUSQUE PONTI.' (Henceforth peace in both oceans.) Exergue: 'SAN MARTIN : O'HIGGINS.' The two names divided by arabesque. Reverse: A mountain range with a rainbow above. Legend: 'PACTIONES ARGENTINO-CHILENSES.' (The Argentine-Chilean agreement.) Below: '28 MAII MCMII.' Exergue: 'POST PACTA, FOEDERA.' (Alliance after agreement.) The quarrel arose over the boundary between the two countries, and Great Britain was the arbitrator. The presidents of the two states were on board their respective ships and met in the Straits of Magellan.
