Pocket telescope
This achromatic telescope folds up small enough to fit into the pocket. It has a mahogany barrel and three brass draw tubes. The brass fittings include a sliding eyepiece cover, an objective lens cap and a sliding sunshade.
The maker's name is inscribed on the smallest draw tube as 'Cox, / DEVONPORT'. Several parts also have the numerals ‘XI’ roughly inscribed on them, probably as part of the manufacturing and assembly process. The telescope once belonged to Lieutenant Frederick Semple (1833-72), who served in the Royal Navy.
