Jug

Creamware jug, transfer-printed in black with a medallion portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) ships in line of battle behind him and swags of foliage above and below. Masonic symbols appear (very small) on the medal in the portrait. Inscribed above the medallion is 'England Expects that every Man will do his Duty And we will have Twenty of them', below 'ADMIRAL NELSON' around the portrait 'WHO DEFEATED THE FRENCH FLEET ON THE 21ST OF OCTR 1805 OF CAPE TRAFALGAR' and within a wreath below 'VICTORY'. On the other side, Britannia is shown mourning at a monument among trees, on which is a circular portrait inscribed 'HORATIA (sic) NELSON', on the plinth 'Born Septm 29th 1758 Died Octr 21, 1805'. Beneath the print is the caption 'Britannia weeping o'er the Ashes of her Matchless Hero, LORD NELSON'.
