Kathleen (1901); Cargo vessel; Barge, Thames

Scale: 1:32. A model of the Thames barge Kathleen (1901) made entirely in wood which has been realistically painted, with metal and organic material fittings. The hull is flat bottomed and straight sided and rigged with leeboards on either side, and is painted entirely black apart from a fine white line on the upper edge at deck level, and a decorative yellow line. The single deck is painted light grey and there are two covered hatches, a square hatch forward of the mast and a large rectangular hatch aft of it. Deck fittings include a stocked anchor, windlass, covered companion hatch, two large coils of rope on the aft hatch cover, a ladder, a small boat rigged in davits on the starboard quarter, and port and starboard navigation lights rigged to the standing rigging. There are two spritsails made from off-white coloured cotton; the other sails are all made from darker coloured cotton. A gaff sail is set at the stern and is rigged to the rudder. The mast is stepped in a tabernacle on deck with both parts finished a natural varnished wood with the top section of the topmast which is painted white. A blue flag is flying from the top of the mast with a white "D". There are trailboards rigged to the port and starboard broadsides and a large flat bottomed rudder at the stern, all of which are painted black. The model has a wheel which can be used to work the rudder. On the port and starboard bows is "Kathleen" and on the stern is "Kathleen Rochester". The model is displayed on a pair of unpainted wooden beams.
