Passenger vessel; Canoe, Polynesian Outrigger

Scale: Unknown. A model of a Polynesian outrigger canoe made from wood with organic material fittings and decoration. The hull is carved from two pieces of wood sewn together horizontally along the waterline. The upper half of the hull is carved in a geometric pattern of parallel lines. The upper and lower halves of the hull are sewn together at five widely spaced intervals. Along the midship port and starboard waterline and three-quarter the hull is decorated with threaded cowrie shells strung on fine cords. The top midship section has a lozenge shaped cockpit for the crew carved into it. Three outrigger booms, all made from roughly shaped wood which is darker in colour than the rest of the model, are rigged to the port and starboard sides of the cockpit. The booms extend to the port side of the model and a single outrigger hangs from them by three pairs of slender poles that are tied to corresponding booms. The model is displayed on a pair of tapering turned pillar supports that are fixed to a bevelled rectangular wooden baseboard which is supported by four bun feet. On a paper label applied to the baseboard is "2". On a handwritten metal label is "Polynesian Outrigger Canoe from Niue Island. Lent to the R.N. Museum by Mrs Keppel Taylor."
