In collaboration with 'Art Needs Me to Speak Too,' Royal Museums Greenwich partnered with primary and secondary school students from London in a project responding to Feeling Blue, a tapestry commissioned by Royal Museums Greenwich and created by Alberta Whittle and Dovecot Studios.
Currently on display in the Queen’s House, this new art piece served as a catalyst for students to delve into its themes and express their interpretations through physical artworks. These artworks have been incorporated into two collage art pieces, which can be viewed in the online gallery below, or on display in the ReThink space at the National Maritime Museum until September 2024.
The students’ discussions and working process were recorded and have been collated by Art Needs Me to Speak Too into an immersive 'audio guide'. The final audio piece weaves together snippets of conversation from the planning and making process, offering a unique insight into the students' interpretive responses to Whittle’s work.
Listen to the final audio piece and view students' individual responses below.
"What a powerful and engaging way to open up conversations around heritage, power and colonialism! Having two art works 'speak' to each other through the ages offers young people tangible and material ways to unpick these complex histories and form their own opinions. It was a fascinating session." Clare Stanhope, Head of Art, Harris Girls Academy East Dulwich
