What does your work involve?
I wear many hats – I’m a disability inclusion and accessibility specialist, a social entrepreneur and a broadcaster. One thing I love about my portfolio career is that it lets me explore all sorts of interests, broadens my horizons and allows me to have an impact on different fields. My real passion is tearing down barriers and promoting inclusivity for everyone in all areas of life.
Being a South Asian woman who experiences disability, I’ve taken it upon myself to make the changes I want to see in the world. Through my intersectional activism, I’m committed to tackling social inequality on a global level by embracing entrepreneurship. I have founded initiatives like Diversability, the Asian Woman Festival and the Asian Disability Network.
I’ve received over 26 honours and awards for my inclusion and activism efforts, and these acknowledgements inspire me to keep pushing forward and making a positive impact in the world.
What inspires you?
I’ve been inspired by many things, especially my faith, family and friends. As a Sikh, the values of equality and selfless service have played a significant role in guiding my journey. These principles have given my life purpose and motivated me to make a positive difference in the world.
My family and friends have been my pillar of support. Even if they haven’t always fully understood my decisions, they have stood by me and encouraged me to pursue my aspirations. Their unwavering belief in me has been a source of strength and motivation, helping me to stay true to myself and my goals.
What message would you give to the next generation?
Don’t ever feel bad about indulging your guilty pleasures, simply having fun or even not doing anything at all – we live in an era of productivity and there are times when switching off is all you need to thrive.
