The buccaneer explorer : William Dampier's voyages /edited and with an introduction by Gerald Norris.
Contains extracts from the writing of Captain William Dampier (1651-1715) who circumnavigated the globe three times, spent much of his life as a buccaneer, privateer or pirate and wrote the first major English travel book A New Voyage Round the World. This was followed by Voyages and Descriptions, including a Discourse of Winds and A Voyage to New Holland detailing the peoples and places he had found or visited. As a result Dampier was acknowledged to be a skilled navigator as well as an explorer and scientific observer and a source of inspiration for Jonathan Swift, Daniel Defoe and Samuel Coleridge.

Titanic hero : the autobiography of Captain Rostron of the Carpathia /Arthur Rostron.
The Carpathia was sailing from New York City on the night the Titanic sank. She received a distress signal from the sinking ship and was able to rescue over 700 survivors. This book is the autobiography of the Carpathia's captain, Arthur Rostron (1869-1940) and was originally published as 'Home from the Sea' in 1931. Rostron held commands on a number of other ships, including Cunard's Mauretania. The book covers his entire career from his apprenticeship on a clipper in 1887 to his retirement in 1931. The chapter on the Titanic disaster is fairly brief but includes a large number of black and white photographs relevant to the subject.

Antarctica unveiled : Scott's first expedition and the quest for the unknown continent
The book provides an in-depth context to the first expedition which Robert Scott undertook in 1901. It details the roles which Sir Clements Markham, Sir John Murray, Armitage and Nansen played in the materialisation of Scott's first expedition to the Antarctic, and the troubles they had to overcome before, for example, the building and designing of the ship and finding the money necessary to fund what was an expensive journey. Additionally, it talks of the troubles faced during the expedition itself, for example, the rocky and unpredictable landscape encountered. Graphs, maps and black and white photographs of ships, the crew and scenery are included throughout the book.

Ancient boats in north-west Europe : the archaeology of water transport to AD 1500 / McGrail, Sean. 1998.
"Ancient Boats in North-West Europe is not a conventional narrative history of water transport [...] On the other hand, early water transport is clearly the focus of this book, dealing, as it does, with the known finds, and with other simple forms of water transport - known elsewhere and at other times - that we may yet find in the archaeological record of north-west Europe. The book's prime concern is with the technical aspects of these ancient rafts, boats and ships: the raw materials used; 'design' methods; how vessels were built; the nature of the environment in which they were used; methods of propulsion & steering; what sorts of speeds they could achieve; how close to the wind they could sail; how much cargo or how many men they could carry; how they were navigated across the trackless sea; and how landing places were chosen. Although plank boats and ships are dealt with in some detail, much emphasis is placed on rafts and non-plank boats, since these are the craft most likely to have been used in earliest times about which we know least." -- Taken from the Preface.

Hard down! Hard down! : the life and times of Captain John Isbester from Shetland : 1852-1913 /Captain Jack Isbester ExC FNI.d.
"Hard Down! Hard Down! describes the eventful life of a Shetland man in pursuit of his ambitions - to reach the top in his profession, to find a wife, to cherish a family, to do his job well and to be respected by his peers. The account is enlivened by extracts from numerous well-chosen family letters, diaries and postcards revealing the minutiae of shipboard and family life 120 years ago. These include a bachelor night out in 'Frisco, buying slippers in Dantzig and a captain who changed his underclothes at midweek because he could not remember which weekend his wife had suggested! After four years as a fisherman in the stormy waters around Shetland, John Isbester chose to spend his next forty years in large square-rigged sailing ships from Liverpool at a time when shipping casualties were all too common. Remarkable feats of survival and tragic deaths are described with clarity and detail. Happier times are also remembered with picnics in Sydney harbour with captain, family and friends transported in the ship's longboat, rowed by the eight apprentices. John Isbester's wife, and sometimes their children, sailed with him on several year-long voyages accompanied by her upright piano. Her letters provide an extra dimension, describing conditions ashore in Sydney, 'Frisco, Antwerp and La Rochelle. She also describes the birth aboard ship of her ninth child! Extracts from the diary of an observant young Scots solicitor on a voyage from Liverpool to Sydney provide many insights into the nature of life aboard a large square-rigged sailing ship on a long voyage. The author, also a professional mariner, has compiled a record of the life of his grandfather from diligent research of shipping records held in the many parts of the world to which John Isbester sailed. Technical issues are illustrated with numerous diagrams for the reader and there are new insights into the loss of the Dalgonar and the acclaimed saving of 26 of the crew."--Provided by the publisher.
