In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
When I was in Virginia, Governor Nicholson informed me their Lordships had questioned him about Cyprus masts, as the trees are plentiful in Mary Land and they desired to have an experiment with one tree. I ordered a foretop mast and set it in our passage for England and found it very serviceable. I find that it is considerably lighter than our own Spruce or Pine masts, but I fear that if they cut great trees to make lower masts they will find them hollow. Signed Captain Crow, commander of the NORWICH.
