For the first time since the ship's arrival in Greenwich in 1954, visitors can climb the rigging of Cutty Sark and get a taste of what it would have been like to sail the historic ship.

What's the experience like?

Starting with a briefing underneath the ship’s beautiful hull, those brave enough to take on the challenge head up to the Main Deck and climb onto the ship’s 'ratlines' (rope ladders).

From here you can make your way up into the rigging, just as hundreds of sailors did during Cutty Sark’s long and fabled career at sea.

When you reach the platform, take a breath and drink in the view while looking down on a true London icon. Then it's time for one final challenge: the Lower Topsail Yard! Grip the bar and hold on tight as you shuffle along the footrope. Be brave, look up and feel the rush of life at sea.

A controlled descent takes you from the lofty heights of the rigging straight back down to the Main Deck.

You can then join up with friends and family and continue your Cutty Sark adventure. Remember, your Rig Climb ticket includes free access to all areas of the ship, so make sure you explore the crew's cabins and take a stroll around the decks, before ending with a drink beneath the ship's gleaming hull. Who is the rig climb suitable for?

The Cutty Sark Rig Climb Experience is open to anyone aged 10 and over. There is no upper age limit, as long as you are fit and healthy, and no climbing experience is required.

The experience is not suitable for people with certain medical conditions, e.g., pregnancy or heart conditions. You must not be suffering from any medical condition that may put the health and safety of you or others at risk.

We provide access for visitors who are unable to physically climb the rigging. Contact us at bookings@rmg.co.uk to discuss your requirements.

All participants must sign a waiver before the rig climb, and children aged between 10-17 require parental consent and at least one paying adult joining them on the climb.

Is there an age limit?

Participants must be at least 10 years old.

Children aged between 10-17 require parental consent and at least one paying adult (18+) accompanying them on the climb. One adult can accompany up to five children.

When is the Rig Climb open?

How much do tickets cost?

Adults: £55
Children (10-17)*: £45
Under 25s / Students: £49

Tickets include general admission to Cutty Sark, meaning you can take part in the climb and explore the ship on the same day. All safety equipment and storage of personal items is included.

Royal Museums Greenwich Members can climb the rigging for just £28. If you become a Member before booking, you can take advantage of the discount AND get free unlimited entry to Cutty Sark for a year.

*Children under 18 require parental consent and must be accompanied by at least one paying adult or student (18+) on the climb. One adult can accompany up to five children.

How do I book?

When you're ready to book, click here for ticket information and head to our online booking system.

First pick your date and entry time using the calendar, then select the number and type of tickets you require and click 'add to basket'.

Tickets for child climbers must be booked in combination with an adult or student. If there's more than one child in your group, select a 'combination' ticket first. You will then be given the option to add up to four child tickets later in the booking process.

Tickets will be emailed to you once you have completed the booking process. If you don't receive a message or are having problems with booking, contact our team at bookings@rmg.co.uk.

Remember to bring your tickets with you on the day of your visit. You can either show them on your phone or print out a copy.

Please note that all tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable, so it is important to familiarise yourself with our terms and conditions before purchasing tickets. For bookings of six or more people, email bookings@rmg.co.uk.

When should I arrive, and how long does the experience last?

Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled rig climb (as indicated on your ticket). You'll be given a short safety briefing and learn more about what it was actually like to live and work on board Cutty Sark.

The climb itself will depend on the speed of each individual. We recommend allowing up to an hour to enjoy the whole experience.

Remember, your ticket also includes general admission to Cutty Sark on the same day, so give yourself enough time to enjoy the ship before or after your climb!

Are there any height or weight restrictions?

Participants must be:

At least 1.2m/3ft9in tall (due to the gap in the rope ratlines)
Less than 21 stone (130kg) in weight.

The harnesses used have a maximum waist width of 130 cm/51.1in, and a maximum upper thigh width of 75cm/29.5in.

Planning your visit to Cutty Sark

Cutty Sark is a quick and easy journey from central London via train, DLR and bus. There is a secure car park nearby at the National Maritime Museum, which is open to visitors during weekends, bank holidays and school holidays.

The Cutty Sark Café is located on the lower ground deck of the ship, serving deli sandwiches, fresh cakes, cream teas, assorted snacks and children’s dishes, with many healthy options.
