In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board

Several seamen are daily deserting from His Majesty's ships at Spithead and Portsmouth and we have given orders to the Constables at Petersfield and others, that for each seaman as they shall deliver to the Clerk of the Cheque at Portsmouth as a deserter they shall be allowed 20 shillings. You are directed to give the necessary orders to the Clerk of the Cheque to pay this sum and to take a receipt from the person to whom he pays the money. You are to imprest money to the Clerk of the Cheque to defray the cost of this charge.
