In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board

On the 18th January 1697 a Court Martial was held aboard the QUEEN at Spithead into the loss of the PORTSMOUTH and it was held that despite the ship having lost both topmasts as well as being outnumbered by the enemy by four to one, the Captain, Officers and Company had been responsible for the loss of the ship as they had surrendered before the enemy had attempted to board. All were sentenced to lose all their pay for their time in the PORTSMOUTH. A copy of the findings is enclosed.
