Letters from John Short to Ella Ambrose June to December 1933.
Aboard SS VARSOVA, Short writes on 3rd June about how he has taken to sleeping on deck with the mates due to the heat. 8th June he writes about a party he went to at a friend's bungalow 'about twenty miles outside Bombay' followed by a day of surfing and swimming. 19th June a new new Third Mate has been drafted in after the last was 'shifted' because 'the Chief did not like his face'. On the 28th June, the VARSOVA arrives in Karachi, the sea is very rough and Short complains of acute seasickness. The bad weather continues on the journey through the Persian Gulf, as fog makes it difficult to pick up wireless messages from other ships. September's letters give particularly detailed accounts of Short's work on the ship. Two photographs of riverscapes are enclosed with 21st September letter, annotated on verso: "Abadan", "Shatt-El-Arab River". Cargoes on this particular trip include many tons of opium and 4000 tons of dates. The last letter in November encloses a photograph annotated "The Mosque Ashar. See the Poudah [?] woman carrying some matting". December's letters mostly cover family news and the various issues with sending different kinds of gift over such a long distance.
