Document signed by Josiah Burchett (c.1666-1746), Secretary to the Admiralty (1694-1742)

Their Lordships have given directions to the Commander-in-Chief in the Downes, to take particular care for the security of merchant ships, as shall from time to time come there, and in particular those employed in carrying ordnance or victualling, from any attempts made on them by the enemy's privateers or chaloupers. You are directed that for future stores for the Downes, Masters of ships should advise the Commander-in-Chief with what stores their ships are laden and their Lordships direct that you give the like orders to the Commissioners of the Victualling.
