Document signed by Josiah Burchett (c.1666-1746), Secretary to the Admiralty (1694-1742)

Commissioner Wilshaw and Commissioner Hill, two members of your Board, have been directed, together with some other Gentlemen, to proceed to the Nore and inspect the performance of Robert Gordon's Engine on board the SOUTHAMPTON.
They are also directed that on their way to the Nore they should inspect an Invention called the Sea Crab in the HOPE, and report on its usefulness in the same manner as they are directed in relation to Robert Gordon's. You have sent a report made to you of the difference between the Sea Crab and one placed by Captain Ormerod on the HAMPSHIRE, and if judged necessary to try both, then these Gentlemen should try that in the HAMPSHIRE.
