In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
Ref. your letter of the 11 inst. Considering the Rt. Hon. Edward Russells letter on behalf of Mr Allen who acts as Master Shipwright at Cadiz although he was only a Second Assistant at Portsmouth when he was sent abroad, and that Mr Pitts one of the Master Attendants at Chatham was on a higher salary. As he has performed the duty of Master Shipwright to the satisfaction of Admiral Russell and Captain Willshaw, you think it reasonable that he should have the same salary. You also informed us that not just the Officers but others employed there should be paid extra allowances for extra cost and pain of working abroad, and that it is impossible for them to live on their ordinary salaries, and you thought it reasonable to reward them under the rule as Capt. Willshaw and Ayles and be considered under our Orders if we have no objections. Upon consideration, we do hereby Desire and Direct you to cause Mr. Allen to allowed the same salary as Mr. Pitts and that other Officers be rewarded by the same rules as Captains Willshaw and Ayles.
