Narrative of the Voyage of H.M. Vessels LEVEN and BARRACOUTA by Thomas Boteler.

Volume of narrative of a survey of various African coastal areas by Thomas Boteler, in the form of an informal but extremely informative journal. Captain William Fitz-william Owen's account of the same voyage was published in 1833 in two volumes with the title "Narrative of voyages to explore the shores of Africa, Arabia, and Madagascar : performed in H.M. ships LEVEN and BARRACOUTA, under the direction of Captain W.F.W. Owen, R.N." Boteler's account was published in 1835 as "Narrative of a voyage of discovery to Africa and Arabia, performed in His Majesty's ships, LEVEN and BARRACOUTA, from 1821 to 1826, under the command of Capt. F. W. Owen, R.N." The reasons for the delay in the publication of Boteler's work are given in the preliminary remarks by the editor of the published first edition. The chapter and page numbers given on the loose drawings intended to illustrate the volume refer to chapter and page numbers in Boteler's manuscript.
