Illustration: "Poor Tom / No. 26".
Black ink and watercolour drawing of a man wearing a conical hat and glasses, carrying a telescope, standing on a small ship. The title could be "Poor Tom" or "Poor I am", it is not clear. An annotation on the back of the page in a different hand states: "This sketch of himself was done by Captain Boteler to amuse his family by giving them an idea of the dress adopted on his survey in order by the beard etc to bespeak the respect of the natives - it is no likeness". It is unclear where or whether this illustration links with the manuscript volume.
