Richard Thomas Cullen (1886-1972) joined the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, as a supernumerary computer in March 1901 and worked through several grades to become Principal Scientific Officer of the Meridian Department, making numerous observations with the Airy Transit Circle. He retired in 1950.
