Document signed by James Southerne, Secretary to the Admiralty, fl. 1690-1694.
Having received your request for a Convoy be provided for the Constant ladened with Naval Store from the Downs to Portsmouth, I can confirm that orders have been sent to provide the escort at the first opportunity. I am commanded to send you the enclosed copy of a letter from Captain Beaumont Commander of HMS DREADNOUGHT regarding her Gunning. Their Lordships require you to enquire into the situation and report what you think fitting to done. This letter also seems to suggest that the cables of the ship go out the forecastle, this is not usual in ships of this size and they desire to know how this occurred.
