Letter from Lieutenant Joseph H. Marryat to this mother, sent from HMS CRACKER off Kinburn Fort, dated 19 October 1855. During the Crimean War Marryat was a lieutenant in command of the wooden screw gunboat HMS CRACKER (1855), which had a leading role in the attack on Kinburn on the northern coast of the Black Sea. Following the success of these operations Marryat was promoted to the rank of commander.
