In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
Captain John Votear, formerly Commander of the FIREDRAKE, and the Widow of William Rogers, Gunner of the PORTSMOUTH, which were taken by the French, have presented their Petitions, stating that upon their return from Prison there to Plymouth in March 1689, Sir Cloudesley Shovell ordered them on board the DEPTFORD in order to give information to Admiral Russell concerning the French Fleet.
This Ship did not meet the Admiral, but they continued on board her for more than two months for which they pray they may be allowed Pay.
We direct you allow them by Bills on the Navy Treasurer such a Sum of Money as a reward for the said service, as their Pay as Commander and Gunner respectively would have amounted to for their time on the DEPTFORD.
