In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
Her Majesty has been pleased by her Order in Council of July 25th to direct this Board to imprest and take up some Merchant Ships to be employed as Men of War of the 4th and 5th Rates.
You have informed us that the Merchant Ships called the LOYAL MERCHANT, ESSEX and BERKELEY CASTLE are fitting to be employed as Men of War of the 4th Rate, and the PRUDENCE as a Man of War of the 5th Rate.
We direct you endeavour to agree with Owners the hire of these Ships, and if no agreement reached the Ships are to be imprest and fitted out for Sea at their Majesties' charge in some of the Merchant Yards in this River.
Freight is to be allowed at the usual Rates allowed, and the Owners are to be assured that punctual Payment will be made for the value of the said Ships if they are burnt, sunk or taken by the Enemy.
