In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board

Several men belonging to 1st, 2nd and 3rd Rate ships ordered to lie in harbour and be continued in pay this winter, are made Run by the Clerk of the Cheque of the yards, for not giving their attendance. Our Order dated 4 May 1692 was not intended for those ships which were to be kept in harbour in pay in winter, but only for such as came in to be fitted and were hastened out again to sea. You are directed to have the Runs taken off for those men to be kept in pay and continue in harbour for the winter and who shall return to their duty before 20 December next. They should only be pricked [listed] for the times of their absence according to the Rules of the Navy.
