In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
Court Martial held on board the VICTORY at the Buoy of the Nore on Wednesday 29 March 1693. President, Sir John Ashby, Admiral of the Blue and Captains Nevill, Gother, Pickard, Bokenham, Munden, Good, Price, Avery, Hancock, Soames, Killingworth, Shovell. The SCARBOROUGH ketch, Captain Thomas Taylor, Master and Commander, was taken by a French privateer, on 12 January last on the coast of Ireland. The ketch was engaged with the privateer for about 2 hours and Captain Taylor and his officers defended the ketch as long as could be expected. Resolved that Captain Taylor and his officers were not wanting in their duty. George Clay, Pilot of the LONDON MONARCH hired ship, ran her aground on the Barrow Sand. Captain and officers testified that he had been diligent but had made a mistake. Resolved that he be deprived of his branch under the 25th Article of War. The MILFORD was run aground near Sunderland on 12 August last. Resolved that this was due to negligence by the Master, Joseph Sewell and that he be dismissed under the 25th Article. Captain Roger Vaughan had dismissed the Pilot and was guilty of a misdemeanour under the 33rd Article. Resolved that he fined 5 months pay to the Chest at Chatham.
