In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
Copy of an undated letter from Thomas Norwood, late Master of the VINE KETCH, a tender to the LICHFIELD, addressed to Admiral Russell, in which he requests some award be made him in view of his having been wounded in action.
He states that he was ordered by the Commander of the LICHFIELD to sail his ketch to the Downs under convoy of the MERLIN KETCH, commanded by Captain Galloway. During this passage the two vessels were attacked by French privateers who twice boarded the MERLIN KETCH. Norwood rendered assistance to the MERLIN KETCH and was wounded in the shoulder and arm. His Mate was also wounded and a man killed. He had previously been in another ketch which foundered at sea on passage to the Straits.
