In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
We are informed by Sir Cloudesley Shovel that upon the sudden surprise of the late intended invasion, and being ordered by Admiral Russell to make all possible dispatch with the Ships then at the Nore to the Downs, he was obliged to take about one hundred and fifty Men out of the DUCHESS to put the rest of the Ships in a sailing condition.
These Men continued on board the Ships where they were ordered for several weeks, though they were borne on the Books of the DUCHESS.
It being thought necessary to procure Supernumeraries for the DUCHESS by Captain Stewart on the orders of Sir Cloudesley Shovell, we direct you to allow this on this occasion.
