In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
Sir Edward Gregory, Commissioner at Chatham, in his letter of 21 October, advised us what has been done for the better security of the yard there. We send you a copy of this. He advises us that the workmen of the yard want arms which we are surprised at, and you are directed to make enquiry and let us know as to whether these workmen, when formed into a regiment some years since, were not issued with small arms, and if so, what has become of them. We think that guard boats should be appointed and constantly on duty in the harbours at night. You are to report to us your opinion in this matter, as well as at Plymouth and Portsmouth, the River Medway and River Thames. You are to give us your opinion in what manner a guard may be kept on the stores and the ships building in His Majesty's yards.
