In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board

Desperate times. The Commissioners for Victualling are to be ordered to supply the RAINBOW at Spithead with three weeks' Victuals at whole allowance without delay; but the Commissioners have pleaded lack of money or credit and are unable to supply the ships at Portsmouth. The Admiralty speculates whether, if the ships proceeded to the Downs, it might be easier to supply them there. The Navy Board also informs the Admiralty that the supplier of Neccessaries is unable to supply more due to the amount of money already owed to him. Meanwhile the Admiralty exacerbates the situation by enclosing a further list of ships in want and informs the Navy Board that if more are added they will be informed. The letter continues by announcing that while the Admiralty is considering sending the capital ships from the Nore to the Downs they want to know if the ships can be supplied at the Nore before departure or whether some part can be supplied in the Downs. In addition, the Commissioners of the Registry are to ascertain the freight due on the goods that have arrived aboard the YARMOUTH from Turkey and send the proceeds to Greenwich Hospital. The letter ends by giving an instruction for the Officers and Company of the Milford to be paid their wages having gallantly resisted the enemy when their ship was taken.
