Administrative / biographical background
He joined the 14th Punjab Indian regiment, serving in Turkey and Mesopotamia during the First World War; his regiment returning to India in 1919. Developing a keen interest in those who had served in India, he began compiling lists of people in 1933 taking the form of a large card index. After retiring from the army he became Honorary Librarian of the Society of Genealogists. On the outbreak of the Second World War, Percy-Smith was recalled and served again in India and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Brigadier Bullock also shared an interest and published several works including 'Indian Cavalry Standards' (1930) and 'British Military Adventurers in India, 1750-1850' (1941). He typed Percy-Smith's list of five thousand monumental inscriptions in a volume called 'Deaths in India vol 1.' This was later complimented with 'Marriages in India' volume 1 appearing in the Society of Genealogists journal, September-December 1941 (no later volumes was produced). Percy-Smith and Bullock both worked on 'Deaths In India' producing volumes two to four, with a total number of twenty-nine thousand entries in three volumes. Percy-Smith was in the Military Accounts Office, India, in 1946, soon returning to England and became a Fellow of the Society of Genealogists in 1948. In 1949 he began preparing an index to all the marriages in the India Office records between 1698 and 1900, including places that had at one time been administered from India; including Burma, St. Helena and Penang. This massive card index contains circa forty thousand entries and is held at the Society of Genealogists. He also produced an 'Index to Vols 652-666 (circa end of 18th century, early 19th centuries) of the India Office's Marine Miscellaneous series. Percy-Smith died in 1975.
