First letter hoping that Irene's party can make it to tea the following day, second letter apologising for not being able to accept Irene's invitation due to the fact Ernest has to be on board HMS DUNCAN during the fireworks in case of any accidents.

HMS DUNCAN was commissioned in 1903, she served with the Mediterranean Fleet until 1905, at which she was transferred to the Channel Fleet. Damaged in a collision with HMS ALBION in late 1905, HMS DUNCAN was transferred to be part of Atlantic Fleet from February 1907 until November 1907 captained by Arthur W. Ewart. After further service with the Mediterranean Fleet, in 1913 she was assigned to the 6th Battle Squadron and based at Portsmouth, where she served as a gunnery training ship. HMS DUNCAN was being refitted when World War I broke out. Ernest David Rutherford was surgeon on HMS DUNCAN in 1908 and became Captain 1917.
