Journal kept on HMS MALACCA, HMS DONEGAL and HMS SYLVIA, 1868-1873.
Journal kept by Holland as a lieutenant serving in the Americas and Canada on board HMS MALACCA - 1 January1868-28 August 1869 (follows on from HND/101/3); at Portsmouth and passage to Hong Kong - HMS DONEGAL - 16 November 1869-4 May 1870; the Inland Sea of Japan on board the survey ship HMS SYLVIA - 4 May 1870-24 March 1873. It documents routine activities and conditions, and contains some detailed and descriptive accounts of events and local peoples/places. There is some interesting discussion on earthquakes in Chile/Peru and Jamaica. During his passage to join the SYLVIA in Hong Kong, his ship was accompanied by HMS MONARCH, bearing the remains of the American philanthropist George Peabody back to his homeland.
