In letters from the Sick and Hurt Board, April 1796
Daedalus’s surgeon, Mr Winter, administered Peruvian Bark while the ship was off the coast of Africa before sailing for the West Indies. Its circulation subsequently resulted in only two deaths (one alleged to be caused by an apoplectic fit, the other from an old internal complaint). Upon the Captain was pleased, the bark and wine resulted in ‘not one person so employed having been taken ill.

Administrative / biographical background
Peruvian Bark or China bark, is a former remedy for malaria, as the bark contains quinine used to treat the disease.
