In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
Extract of a letter from Sir Edward George Commissioner at Chatham in which he welcomes the proposal for sending Marines to work in the dockyard and suggests tasks with which they could assist. He assumes they will not be permanent and raises the issue of their receiving pay, as well as referring to it helping with problems caused by deserting seamen. He concludes by saying that upwards of 300 men would be a useful number.
