In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
You have represented in your letter of November 24th that a Prize lately taken by the SOUTHAMPTON, called the JOLLY, is fitting for a small Sixth Rate and that she may carry fifty Men and ten Sakers in War at home, and forty men and ten in War abroad, and peace at home and abroad.
We direct you to buy this Ship from the Prize Officers at the easiest rate possible, and cause her to be fitted for Sea at Plymouth where she now is, to serve as a Man of War of the sixth Rate, and that she be established in the Royal Navy with the aforesaid number of Men, and number and nature of Guns.
You are also to cause her to be manned with her highest Complement of Men and furnished with three months' Provisions for service in the Channell, or so much as she can conveniently stow.
