In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board

The Navy Board had been asked to advise when it would be feasible to start building some Fourth and Fifth Rates and where they may be built. Instructions are given to proceed with the construction of a number of ships as follows: a Fourth Rate at Woolwich; another at Deptford; and another at Portsmouth; two more in the Thames and a Fifth Rate at Plymouth, all with qualifying remarks as to timing and the readiness of the Yards. In addition, three Fourth Rates of the same dimensions as the BRISTOL are to built, along with one Fifth Rate of the same size as the last ships built at Woolwich, Deptford, Portsmouth and Plymouth. Contracts are to be let to Merchant shipbuilders in the Thames for two Fourth Rates of the same dimensions as others - all on the best terms available. Estimates of costs are to submitted on a regular basis.
