In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
From the survey of the NORTHUMBERLAND, now at Spithead, of which you give an account in your letter of 8 April, it appears that she should be brought into dock to be repaired. You are directed to have her laid up at Portsmouth and her Commander, officers and company (except the standing officers) turned over to the ESSEX as soon as she is ready to receive them. She is to be victualled for service in the Channel with all dispatch. The officers and company of the yachts MARY and KITCHEN are to be paid the wages due to them to 1 August 1689. The complement of the MARY yacht is to be increased to 30, the number appointed for her in time of war, and an allowance made for the wages and victuals of such men. We have ordered the hired vessels the PROVIDENCE hoy the WILLIAM & ROBERT dogger up to Deptford. The former is to be cleaned and refitted for sea with all possible dispatch with 3 months victuals, The WILLIAM & ROBERT is said to be unfit to be a man-of-war and you are to survey her and give us your opinion.
