In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board

A printed copy of an Order in Council made at Whitehall on the twenty-second of February 1693/4 during which the King and a number of high officials were present. The Order is divided into ten parts covering the increase in pay of various ranks of officer together with provision for half pay for those when still serving but ashore. It continues by stipulating the number of servants to which each rank is entitled and forbids the taking of money by the captains of Naval ships from the Masters of the ships to be convoyed. Also stated are the procedures to be observed by ships captains and by port officials regarding the making of reports as to why ships wish to enter or leave certain ports. Their state of repair is also to be recorded. The Order commences by explaining the reasons for making increases in pay and for imposing a number of conditions all of which are designed to restore discipline to the Navy and improve its effectiveness. Signed by John Nicholas, Parliament Official. The Order is countersigned by James Southerne, Secretary to the Admiralty.
