Document signed by James Southerne, Secretary to the Admiralty, fl. 1690-1694.
Upon receiving complaints from several commanders about the want of beer, I gave orders for the Victuallers' Agent to supply them to enable them to sail with me, but Mr Ridge the Brewer refuses to give the King credit for one butt until his bills are paid. It is my opinion that he presumes on his being the only person in these parts that can supply their Majesties and it may be of ill consequence to depend on him.
