July 1799] William Drury, to Markham, Centaur, with an account of the the siege of Naples, and wonders of Nero’s Baths, Pompea, Lord Nelson with Sir William and Lady Hamilton, sailed from Palermo, on 25th June found the French in possession of fort of St Elmo, and Jacobins in castles of Nova and Oava, surrender agreed with the Cardinal de Rofo, marched with 30-40 thousand calabrians to meet Lord Nelson, who returned to Palermo, negotiations with Jacobins with Captain Fait[sic] in the Seahorse, to escort them to Toulon, appearance of Lord Nelson sanctioning the negotiation, to the astonishment of the fleet the transports were brought to lord Nelson, and sent in irons to ships of the squadron, the Neapolitan commander taken on board Foudroyant, hanged on a Neapolitan frigate, Troubridge sent with marines to Fort St Elmo, French flag of truce on 12 July, sending the gazette before the surrender
